I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, with a minor in Criminal Justice, from Colorado State University in 1983, and my Masters of Social Work, at the University of Denver in 1990. I became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (license # 991013) in the State of Colorado in 1992. I have been providing sex offense specific treatment since before the inception of the Colorado Sex Offender Management Board, and have been a Full Operating Level Approved Treatment Provider and Evaluator since 1996, and an Approved Clinical Supervisor since 2015. I was trained in administering and interpreting LOOK Assessments in 1996, and Penile Plethysmographs in 2015.

From July 1990 until August 2020 I was employed at Aurora Mental Health Center. For the first two years I was a therapist on the child and family team, and during that time the opportunity presented itself to work with individuals who were court ordered into treatment for domestic violence, sexual assault or anger management, which I did in addition to my work with children and families. When the need for these services grew, I transitioned into working full time with these populations. For the past 15 years I was the program director of the Forensics team.

I have completed a minimum of 40 required continuing education hours, related to the evaluation and treatment of those convicted of a sex offense, every three years since 1996. In addition, I have completed all training required of those working for a community mental health center, since 1990. I have had the pleasure of supervising numerous interns and therapists towards becoming a SOMB Approved Treatment Provider/Evaluator, as well as towards their licensure. I accepted a position, and served as a member of the Community Corrections Board for approximately two years.

Helping others has been important to me going all the way back to my childhood. I used to beg my parents to let anyone eating alone in a restaurant sit with us. I obviously did not know if they felt alone, but I thought they did. After working for so many years with those convicted of committing a sexual offense, I have come to understand they may have felt alone, stigmatized, and ostracized, before engaging in this destructive act. They almost certainly feel this way afterwards, which is not conducive to preventing it from happening again, and preventing further victimization is my ultimate goal.

Being able to educate people about the correlation between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors is extremely rewarding when they “get it”. This is true whether it is the client, their friends and family members, or the community. Getting to witness people be successful in their growth is what motivates me to keep doing this. Having been given the privilege of choosing the professionals I do this with makes me happy to come to work every day.
